One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is: Does C60 work against COVID-19?
The antiviral effects of C60 have been documented for years, with the first major article appearing in the Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry journal in 2017, documenting the anti-HIV properties of the molecule (1).
In the last six months, two peer reviewed scientific articles have been published, specifically analysing the use and effectiveness of C60 against COVID-19. Both of these scientific papers showed positive results, suggesting that additional in vitro and in vivo studies be conducted on the use of C60 against COVID-19.
To quote directly from the conclusion of the article C60 fullerene against SARS-COV-2 coronavirus, published in one of the world’s most renowned science journals, Nature, “pristine C60 fullerenes can form a high stable aqueous colloidal solution and exhibit anticoronavirus activity, this expands their use for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes” (2).
In addition to C60’s own effectiveness against COVID-19, the molecule is also being studied as a drug delivery mechanism for other known COVID-19 treatments such as Chloroquine, as the paper titled Quantum mechanical simulation of Chloroquine drug interaction with C60 fullerene for treatment of COVID-19 highlights (3).
Although these studies may be exciting, it is not lawful to make any claims that C60 can be used to treat or prevent COVID-19. However, we do recommend that you read the articles mentioned in this blog post and share them to your networks!
